Program to Automate Tasks - what's it called?

I remember using a program that came with Windows 3.x that allowed you to automate tasks. For example, you could record mouse movements, mouse clicks, keyboard strokes all as a series of events. Then you could tie those series of events to a special hotkey and when you hit it, it would perform all that stuff. I found it very useful when I did map editing in back in the days of Civ2 - it let me automate many mouse clicks into a few keystrokes.

Does anyone remember what this program was called? Does anyone know if it works in Windows 9x? How about NT/XP?

It seems like you're describing some sort of Macro. What do you need to do with the program, Word has a sophisticated macro system

Hmm... Let's see.

Here's how it works. You set it up to start recording (at this point it records every mouse click and movement you make, every keystroke you press, and so on.) Then you click around, move your mouse and perform whatever task it is that you need, then you stop the recording and save it. Once saved, you set-up a certain keyboard conbination to press. When you press these keyboard shortcuts it then proceeds to move your mouse, and press the same keys you previously recorded.

It can be very useful for automating things that require navigating through many menus just to do a simple task (which I had to do with Civ2).

BTW, the name of the program had the word "recorder" in it I believe.

It was either simply recorder or ______ recorder.

Here is some info:

I haven't found it for 3.1, yet. Do a Google search on "Mouse and Key Recorder" and see if you can find the 3.1 version. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [idea]

That's the program! Thanks. I am looking for an equivalent for Win XP if anyone is wondering.

And that link is useful nobrain, and looked to be exactly what I wanted, but then I got to the pay part.
I might be willing to pay maybe $2 max, but that's it.
