Is there a way with the pro curve to inventory the ports in such a way as to get the IP of the system connected to that port?

Telnet to the switch, and use the port address tables (under "status and counters") to get the MAC address for the device attached to that port.
Determining the IP address from the MAC address is an exercise left to the reader, though ARP and logs/reservations on your DHCP server would be the easiest ways...

Solarwinds Engineers editon will do it. Port Mapper is the feature.
