We are currently testing an application that accesses SQL Server. We tend to monitor the processor usage quite a lot.

Every so often the everything seizes up. We can shut down the application we are testing, but SQL Server still seems to be using 99% of the processor.

Even when we stop the services SQL Server doesn't let go of the processor. the only thing we can do is reboot the server when this happens (hardly the most practical solution).

Any bright ideas? Why would this happen and what can we do about it?

We have a similar problem with our SQL server here, are you running SQL server 2000? What we discovered was that when you use Microsoft Search Service there is some sort of bug that Microsoft posted on the website stating that this would cause a high % use on the processor.

Are SQL server looks like its getting a constant beating even when no users are connected. This was suppose to be fixed in SP for SQL server 2000 but after applying this SP we found the problem still occurs. I guess the only thing to do is to what for Microsoft to issue a fix.
