SCO 4.2

SCO server slow response to users, appears 'frozen'
Rebooting helps for a while.

Getting this message in /usr/adm/messages:

CONFIG: newproc - Process table overflow (NPROC = 100 exceeded)

Are there any tweaks I can do to reduce/eliminate this error? Or is it a simple matter of too many processes trying to run? I suspect too many users are trying to connect to the server.

Any help is appreciated
 
NPROC is a tunable kernel parameter.
if you have enough memory available you can increase it.

Your answer brings me to another question or two.

I feel dumb asking this, but how do you check how much system RAM a SCO box has?

And do you happen to remember where I can find the file that holds NPROC param?

I know I have to relink the kernel after changing that param, and to reboot.

sar-r will tell you how much available memory there is.
idtune is the safest way to change kernel parameters otherwise edit /etc/conf/cf.d/stune.

 
To find out how much physical memory is installed on the SCO Computer itself then this should work

tail -100 /usr/adm/messages | grep mem:
(Have a look at /usr/adm/messages - it keeps all the interesting start up stuff about the system) ...
