Hey all...I am a windows guy that is trying to learn Linux. I have linux 7.2 installed on a Celeron 266 128 meg of RAM and it is crawling. I notice that the CPU and RAM are pretty much pegged all the time with the resource watcher. Do I need new hardware? I am using Gnome as my GUI and KDE isn't much better. Can any of you be so kind as to point me in the right direction?
Thanks

If you really want to learn Linux you should forget about using a GUI. Dump the GUI and your machine will be plenty fast enough.

I know, I know, it's difficult moving from Windows to a shell prompt based environment, but if you can help yourself at a DOS prompt you are halfway there. If not, I would suggest to load DOS on a PC and learn that first, that will make the transition a lot less painful.

The main reason for not using a GUI is that eventually you will need to venture into a shell environment to do things the GUI cannot do for you.

The learning curve is steep, but don't give up, the satisfaction of being in total control of the system at system level in very satisfying. Just knowing you don't need some or other GUI wizard to do the work for you will make you feel more like a master instead of an ignorant user.
Only then you will realise how the Windows GUI robbed you of your freedom and control... IBM Certified Confused - MQSeries

hahah excellent response. After reading more of my book I can of felt I need to move in that direction. I am an old DOS left over that loves anything command line so should be an "easier" transition. Thanks for your input and I am looking forward to learning this OS and reading further posts.

As for the spec, it should be OK running a GUI environment other than Gnome or KDE (which are very intensive) Try Window Maker if you like the Mac thing. It uses a lot less resources.

Personally, I'm happy running Gnome on a 400 Celeron with 128MB RAM so maybe your spec is OK - just make sure that you're not running any uncessary daemons/services that are hogging resources - use the top and gtop (Gnome) apps to see what's doing what.

I agree with aixmurderer. A lot of people in this forum talk about wanting to learn Linux, but then they go out and install the GUI and get GUI tools like webmin. In my opinion, if you can't work from the command line, you don't know Linux. Most servers don't even have a GUI installed at all. Webmin and other GUI tools don't really teach you anything. The other advantage to working from the command line is that you are actually teaching yourself a lot of UNIX commands as well.
