Hello All,

I just start studying for my ccna and went out and bought a couple of 2501 routers to setup a lab. When I power on the routers a I see the following errors. Can anyone help me or advice me if the errors can be fix. Thank you for your help.

Notice: NVRAM invalid, possibly due to write erase.

%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be correctly understood

%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg (Timed out)
%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg (Timed out)

and everytime I goto config t and when I press Ctrl Z I get this message.

router1#config t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
router1(config)#^Z
router1#
00:03:49: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by console

router1#config t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
router1(config)#^Z
router1#
00:03:49: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by console

The above message is normal, when you use shift+ctrl+z it exits you from Global Config mode to Exec User. You then get the message that the Sytem was configured from console by console.

Notice: NVRAM invalid, possibly due to write erase.

The above line is the router saying, Dude I have no configuration file, someone must have deleted it?!?! Once you create a startup config (basically perform: Router# write memory ) it should stop saying that at boot up.

%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be correctly understood

This is the router saying some of the old configurations may not work with the new IOS. Generally if you issue a copy run start this will clear up. There are other tricks but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Someone set the router to boot and get it's configurations and what not from a tftp server. I can't for the life of me at this moment recall where to get rid of this setting. I'll look it up (I never use it so I forget the commands)and let you know.

I would like to say the command is
router# boot system flash
to clear it but as I said I can't recall right now. Otherwise you would have to force the router to rommon mode and edit from there....not too sure right now.

tschouten,

I just tried...

This is the router saying some of the old configurations may not work with the new IOS. Generally if you issue a copy run start this will clear up. There are other tricks but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

I am still getting the error when I restart the router.
%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.0 may not be correctly understood.

Also, can you tell if how to setup a lab environment with 3 2501 routers. (Ex. Router1 eth0 to Router2 s0, router2 s1 to router3 s2, etc...)

Thanks again.

that normal for having a old conf file and new ios update the config and it should go away

gunthnp,

How do I update the config. I try the copy run start command and then reload. The message still comes up.

Thanks.

the command to remove the tftp errors is

no service config

CCNA,

This is my bootup information. I just got the routers and I didn't do any IOS update. Probably the previous owner did. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks FatmanSuperstar,

The "no service config" command worked.

That was the one I was trying to think of no service config...doh

Ok for the Serial interfaces you are going to need back to back cables. CAB-HD60BTB

There are a lot of websites were you can order these cables. One I use often is, MAIN SITE:

You can browse around and find the cable area, or use this as a direct link:

After you get all your cables you are going to need to know which is the DCE and which is the DTE side of the cables (usually it's labled). Whichever router(s) you connect the DCE side to you need to set clocking on that interface. As for the ethernet interfaces my suggestion use a cheap hub or switch.

TO change clok rates on the routers interfaces:

Router> enable
Router# configure terminal
Router(config) interface serial 0
Router(config-if)# clock rate 64000

You can use the question mark after clock rate to get a list of valid clocking rates. 64000 should work fine for the back to back connections though.
Router(config-if)# clock rate ?

If you want a lab setup, you need a DCE and DTE cable back to back. Im not sure the part numbers but a search around the cisco academy will find.

I run the same thing on my testbed network and works fine, just drop the clockrate onto the correct interfaces etc.

Cheers

Fat
