I had to reinstall XP. Since then I've found that there are some files on my external hard disk that I can't access anymore - it says they are not accessable and access is denied. This isn't all files on the disk just some.

There are no XP permissions set on the folders.

If anyone has any ideas it would be very much apreciated

When you reinstalled XP your SID changed; to the external drive although your name appears the same you are a unknown user.

Windows Networking Share permissions are not a factor; they do not apply in the cases of locally attached storage. All that is required is to reintroduce yourself to the drive by adding yourself as a known user to its table of NTFS permissions. (Note: In XP Home edition you will need to use Safe Mode with a logon as 'Administrator'.)
