Problems Networking XP and 98

Sort of baffled here at a real basic networking issue ...I have multiple pc's but I believe if I can get one 98se to run with xp and solve this issue I can do the same to the rest.

I have used a number of methods to connect the XP to a 98. Each one ends it letting me see the computer via find, run, lots of ways ....then after I find the pc and try to access it it claims that 'I do not have permission to access this network resource ..contact my network admin' ...thats me ....

I have changed the login method, the protocol, and the sharing is up on both with usable files set up and available to be shared, they should be viewable but they are not.

Also a distinct slow down when trying to access the workgroup.

Seasoned network tech here....this one has me stumped

passwords are all lowercase and no spaces ...workgroup name is the same, all lowercase and basic short names for both ... added IPX and removed it just for kicks ..to see if that would jump start it ....tried with and w/o specific ip addresses and various ranges ....like I say ....lets me find it and see it ...wont let me access it ...'I do not have permission to access this network resource ..contact my network admin'

Anyone have any clues ?

.Username and passwords for all users added to all machines?
.Both machines on same subnet?
.Netbios over TCP/IP enabled, all machines?
.You might try removing, then re-installing Client for Microsoft Networks, particularly on Win98 machine
.You might consider using Netbui. There are just some stubborn issues that this can help with. A good discussion of using Netbui in a setting like yours to handle intractible LAN issues:

In addition to bcastner's comments, make sure you have something shared on both machines. And are you using Simple File sharing on the XP machine or is it disabled?

put an entry in your hosts file the IP address and computer name of the two computers...That will do the trick and solve your problem.

Where is the hosts file again?.. Its been while since I had to use it. Also on xp it seems like they hide stuff.

Plus, I went back to obtain Ip auto. It was connected briefly and lost it again.

Sounds like an autonegotiation problem. On both machines set the "mode" or "adapter setting" or whatever it might be called in the Network Adapter, Properties, Configure, Advanced tab to a fixed speed and duplex instead of "Auto." If you are using a hub, set both machines to 10-Half; a switch to 100-Full duplex.

I had the same problem. Turns out that as soon as I disabled ZoneAlarm on the XP machine I was able to 'see' the 98 machine.

I know this sounds crazy esp to a network tech, but if you have the XP machine hooked up to broadbamd, it seems that you cannot use the lan unless windows time server is running on the XP machine.
If this is not the situation, leave the XP machine configured as it is (or would normally be if you were to follow the usual rules), go to the 98 machines, remove all the protocol associations for the NIC from within Network Neighbourhood, then the NIC (Leave Microsoft network alone). Reboot and just install the NIC and a plain vanilla (unassociated) TCP/IP protocol in Network Neighbourhood.
Hey I dunno why either, but it works for me every time. About 6 different lans so far.

jbird0831 is absolutely correct, watch out for firewalls. In particular disable the ICF native XP firewall as it will block all netbios traffic on your LAN into the XP.
