problems formatting dates in Excel XP 1

This is a very strange problem that I have with one user. Regional setting are all set to English UK and dates set to dd/mm/yyyy. Set the format of cells to dd/mm/yyyy (tried both custom and the option provided with excel).

Entering dates reformats the text as mm/dd/yyyy so long as the day is less than 12 (eg. 5/4/2002 - April is displayed as 4/5/2002 - May). If the date is more than 12 (eg 15/4/2002) then it leaves it as text (it cannot resolve a month number of 15).

I've tried everything I can think of. The same spreadsheet opened on a different PC is OK. I was under the impression that if you used the custom format then it would force it to work but this is simply not the case.

Interestingly a new spreadsheet is OK. It is only editing existing ones.

Operating system is Windows 2000 if that makes any difference.

Thanks a lot in advance for any ideas people may have,

Tony

Thanks, I missed that one in my search earlier. Looks like it was that registry setting. I've changed it and tested it briefly but it looks like it works OK.
