Hi folks,
I'm having difficulty deploying software to computers in a security group. I've got a security group setup called Apple QuickTime in which I have a few computers I wish to deploy to the software to. I have a GPO which points to the software package and I set the Apple QuickTime group in Security Filtering.
The problem is no software is being deployed not a peep - usually if there was a problem say with the installation source not being available, one might briefly see the application try and deploy - but I'm not seeing anything.
Any suggestion for troubleshooting this? Am I missing something? Can a policy apply to computers in a security group?

Any help much appreciated.
cheers

You can't apply a GPO to a group object (Yes I know its called Group policy but still......) The GP needs to be linked to the OU that contains the computers that require the software.
Or maybe you are linking the GPO to the domain and using filtering to only have the GPO apply to those computers?

When you use a GPO to install to computers you can only publish the software in the GPO, this means that users would have to go into Add/Remove programs to install the app.

I have applied to group objects in the past, I think it might have been for users though... so applying software to a user. But somehow it seems odd to me that as soon as you take away authenticated users in security filtering and replace it with a group, the GPO will not apply. I do have the computers in the OU I am trying to apply a GPO. I would like to apply the policy higher up the OU "tree" structure and any computers further down the tree will get the software if they are part of the group. Any other suggestions?

Run gpresult on one of the PCs to see if the GPO itself is actually being applied to the computer

I've run a gpresult and it is not being applied.

What does the gpresult say? Also, if you run the gpresults wizard from the GPMC it will give you info about the machine in question(I'm assuming you're running the GPO against computers).
In the results wizard, there is also a tab which shows the event viewer logs for that computer in question.
It sounds like the GPO is not being applied to the OU that is needed. Sometimes it takes a few reboots and gpupdate /force to get the thing to stick.

I've created a test OU outside the normal OU I wish to deploy in and when running the GPResult I get this:

COMPUTER SETTINGS
------------------
CN=S21-BMVMXP,OU=Test OU,DC=hmsg,DC=co,DC=uk
Last time Group Policy was applied: 10/10/2006 at 11:37:03
Group Policy was applied from: dc1.hmsg.co.uk
Group Policy slow link threshold: 0 kbps

Applied Group Policy Objects
-----------------------------
Default Domain Policy
Test GPO
Computer - Apple QuickTime (NEW!)

.... which tells me it's applying the GPO, but hey... no software no clues in the Event Logs... I must be missing a trick here?
any ideas?

cheers

barrone,

ignore my post when I said you can only publish to computers, I must have had a brain freeze. Publish is only available to users. You can only assign software to computers.
Sorry.

no worries.. I know what you meant... ;-)

phew... thought I was going mad. Turns out it's a problem with the QuickTime 7.1.3 msi - just looking into how I can get around this issue.
