I’m new to Diskpart, I want to install multiple operating systems in different partitions on the same disk. I’ve tried creating an extended partition on my primary partition (OS: Windows XP Size:34 GB) but with no success. What am I doing wrong? Could anyone help?

Syntax

“create partition extended size=5000 offset=2000”

To create a partition you need unpartitioned space. I take it the Windows XP partition takes up the full size of the Drive?

The drive is 34Gb in size the Partition is 34Gb so there is no space left for a new partition.

Rezise the XP partition so it only takes up part of the drive, and then create the new partition on the freed up space.

Also it is suggested to do all partitioning before installing any Operating System so as to avoid any loss of files. Partitioning a drive from inside an operating system residing on the drive to be partitioned is not suggested either.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

keenkeen - please give full details of what you are trying to achieve/have done. Eg, which are the multiple operating systems? How large is the hard drive? How much is used by current XP?

If all o/s are versions of windows, and there are less than 5, I'd suggest using primary partitions for all, and a boot manager (I use Install XP - creating partition with its install tools. Then use disk management to create other partitions.

If you want linux or other o/s, please post back.
