Everybody told me that I would need a 'Firewire' cable with an AIEEE card in order to connect to external DVD players and video cameras. So I went down and bought and then installed the cable and the card. Today, a friend brings her DVD player to connect to my compu. It has no connection for this Firewire thing. It has several outs for RCA and then another for 'Optical'. So NOW WHAT THE HELL DO I HAVE TO INVEST IN IN ORDER TO CONNECT TO EXTERNAL VIDEO SOURCES???????

FireWire is used to connect a digital video camera to a computer in order to transfer DV to and from the camera for editing.

To capture from a DVD player, you need some way to capture analogue data - either a bridge from analogue to FireWire (many DV video cameras can do this) or a separate hardware bridge capable of handling analogue conversions.

But if you have a DVD, it is easier to grab the data from a DVD drive in the PC.

Premiere Elements 2 or 3, and Premiere Pro 2 can edit MPEG (that's what is on the DVD) directly. To edit MPEG using earlier versions requires either an (expensive) plug-in or a converter to make the MPEG into DV before import into Premiere. Virtual Dub (free) or Canopus ProCoder Express will do this conversion.
