I brought a switch (Cisco 3524) home from work and configured it through Hyperterminal, setting it's ip address to 164.155.22.x I am having trouble saving the config to a TFTP Server (Solarwinds). I am using a laptop and have a home network that uses 192.168.x.x and am connected to it with wireless. I also have a built-in NIC card that I put a static ip address in as 164.155.22.20 (without a gateway) but I still cannot ping the switch or transfer any files to the TFTP Server. I have a standard network cable going from the built-in NIC to the switch.

I'm pretty new at this. Do I have the cable plugged in correctly and the nic setup correctly? Would trying some kind of "route add" command be worth a shot? Any thoughts as to what I might try next? I'm a little bit frantic because I am supposed to have this done by tomorrow morning.

basically you've put an ip address on a vlan on the switch.. maybe vlan 1. make sure your port are also in that same vlan.
Easiest is to use a straight cable from your laptop into a switchport. Ip address on your laptop should be in the same subnet as the ip on the switch.

CCNA, CCNP..partly ;)
