I have a system I support that for no reason drops to a crawl. OS is ME. I downloaded a program to watch the processes and find the STMGR (Microsoft PC State Manager) is using 99% of the CPU when the system slows down. It appears STMGR loads on start up and just sets there and then for no apparent reason hogs the CPU. What is "PC State Manager" and how can I get it to let go of the CPU?
Thanks...
Marvin

Hi,

goto START|RUN|MSCONFIG then click on the statup tab, and disable everything except the following things found in this FAQ. FAQ748-1600. You need StateManager, I forget what it does but you do need it.

Everything in MSCONFIG can be safely turned off except the 4 things found in that FAQ. You don't need any other programs running in order for them to wrok porperly in Windows. Also in windows check your startup folder and delete any and all files, that aren't necessary or wanted.

Hope this helps! NATE

Disable index services. look under help to find instructions. This will not only stop the slow down but should give you a performance boost. I'm having similar problem in XP and this is the fix I found. It was a bug in NT4 that was never fixed and then win 2000 came out and it was a bug there and still was not fixed. I believe I heard it applied even to win 98. But see if is mentioned in your win help files. If you have such an animal I'd go for it.

"What is "PC State Manager"

It's for system restore.

Xandroid - I couldn't find index services in the Me help or should I be looking somewhere else?
