Problem with Area Codes in Outlook 1

For two years now, my Outlook has been running without a hitch. I used to be able to enter a contact phone number by simply typing the number (ex: 3339999) and when I hit enter, Outlook would automatically reformat the number entered to read: (702) 333-9999 - now, when I enter a phone number in this manner I get an error message "Operation Failed" - and I have to enter the area code, parenthesis, spaces and dashes manually.

Nothing new has been installed on this system... no hardware, no software. One day it worked, the next day it didn't.

The systems is a W2K Pro, SP4.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Anne,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that, and it took it's own sweet time... and made no difference. I'm still getting "operation failed" when entering a unformatted phone number.

Any other ideas? Anyone? It's not life threatening, but it is highly annoying.

Do you have a default country chosen?

I think if you do NOT, then it wants the syntax. I think if you DO, it should behave.

I cannot be sure.

I checked all over and could not find this exact problem.

Anne,

My Regional Settings in Control Panel are set for US. Is there someplace else I should be looking for this? As I stated in my first message, this used to work - Outlook used to complete the phone numbers for me.

Read the article... Thanks, Anne. Sadly, all it really tells me is that it *should* be working (but i knew that already).

Okay.
Got your CDs?
Outlook 2000?

Close all proggies.
Start-Run and type: outlook.exe /regserver
and hit enter.
You MAY have to include the path to outlook.exe if you get a file not found error.

Relaunch Outlook. You may have to reconnect to the appropriate PST or something, but all should be well.
Meanwhile, the registry has been wiped, and it should be refreshed and better.

If not, we'll do it manually.

Am using Office 2000, Outlook 2000-SP3 on a W2K SP4 machine.

Ok.
Close all proggies.
Start-Run and type: regedit
and hit enter.
Browse to:
hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\9.0\outlook

Rename the Outlook folder to OldOutlook.
Close and then launch Outlook.

If that doesn't work, then I cannot tell you where to go next. (I hate SP3, and have even completely uninstalled 2000 and XP, then reinstalled just to go back to SP2.)

Sigh. Thanks for all your help, Anne, but sadly the problem has not been solved. When I get some quiet time later today, I will start over and try each of your suggestions one more time. If that doesn't do the trick, I guess I'll just have to get used to typing phone numbers in the long way. Heavy Sigh. Thanks again for your time and trouble!
