Hope someone can come up with an idea or two -

Situation
Current server - elderly, falling to bits - tape drive not working, in NT domain. The server has failed (back plane, disks etc) several times over the years, and is now the good(ish) bits of several similar servers.

Have now got new server, and installed SQL7.0 but cannot work out how to get one database from the old server to the new one.

Have tried backing up from 6.5 but 7.0 says invalid file. I guess this must be possible? Someone? Unfortunately, I no longer have my SQL6.5 CD.....

Unfortunately you can not restore 6.5 databases directly onto a 7.0 server. You must use the Upgrade Wizard in SQL server 7.0. If you check out books on-line on the topic
"Upgrading from an Earlier Version" it should get you going in the right direction.

Rick.

But you must be able to run SQL 6.5 to do the upgrade! Terry L. Broadbent

You will have to uninstall 7.0 on the new server and then reinstall 6.5. Once you install 6.5 with at least service pack 4 or better, you will then need to install 7.0 with whatever service pack your application will work.

After you have done both of these, you will need to restore the 6.5 database and then use the 7.0 upgrade wizard.
