I want to install a new 12gb hard drive in my compaq Presario 1200 XL-111 lap top. The factory restore disks will not work with this new HD.I tried to install win98se and it failed,Not only once but 3 times. It would install till it rebooted then would give a message of some fatel error and go to black screen and stop.My original HD is still fine but it is to small. I have tried to use Drive Image 2002 to create an image that i would restore to the new drive BUT it says that the partion is of an improper type and will not be able to image it.I am aware that these laptops from big companies need to have all sorts of special files installed.Anyone have any suggesstions?

It sounds to me like your new HD is faulty. Have a look at the HD manufacturers website to see if they have a diagnostic utility for thier drives. If not you could try Maxtor. They have a diagnostic utility that should report errors on other drives as well.
