After wasting 2 days with Microsoft Technical research staff trying to resolve an XP udate conflict I decided to do a total clean reinstall.

All went well until the last update installing security update KB973869 issued 11/8/09. This appeared to install OK and is listed in the add/remove section of control panel.

Howeve, I keep om getting the icon on the task bar saying it needs to be installed. I tried downloading the patch to desktop, doing a clean boot and trying to install it. That did not work either.

MS is now only offereing paid support for this!!

Any ideas anyone?

The same happened to me .
Solved by restoring previously stored backup of Acronis TI, then dloaded Windows Updates again and installed last security updates.

Hello Bronan,

Many thanks for replying.
Not sure I fully understood your reply.

Why wouldn't a totally clean install work with all updates, so what are you doing in acronis that is different?

Is this just another example of MS technical sloppiness and trying to effectively blackmail us into buying windows 7: withdraw critical support for XP then charge per faualt in the UK and issue critical updates that don't work!!

Am I alone in being fed up or cynical about MS? Issue a product which is faulty then charge to rectify its faults!!!!!!!

Hi Bernard,
Don't know why not working with totally clean install- in any case in normal situation critical updates should be installed without any problems, but with MS you can not be never sure.
I just told you how I have resolved this puzzle , that's all.
Besides update KB973869, i was unable to install Removal tool- this for the firs time since I have XP, but at the end even this one was successfully installed in second attempt.

I thought that support for Security Update problems was free?

Thanks Linney,

The FIX IT procedure did not work!!

Yes, it would appear customers in the US can still get free support but in the UK we are now being charged £46 plus VAT for each call - even for critical security update problems!!

See what file version of Dhtmled.ocx or Wdhtmled.ocx (depending on system) you have if it matches version 6.1.0.9247 as per this article, and as you say, you have KB973869 listed in Add or Remove programs, hide the repeated update offered by Windows Update and then forget about it.

I had a similar install update problem where a downloaded update would not update and simply left a message "Unable to install some updates"

The update icon persisted in the task bar and tried to install with each shutdown (btw you can skip the install updates on shutdown)

The following link allowed be to install the update and solved the problem completely:
