Using Cognos 8.3 Go Office (Café) to import a report into either Excel or Powerpoint (2003 versions), once prompts are selected and report retrieves data the error message “Object Reference not set to an instance of an object.” is returned and the import aborted. Whilst the majority of different reports attempted result in the error, some simple reports do import successfully and BI analysis works fine in excel. Is this something that anyone else has encountered or can advise how I can proceed to resolve it?

Problem importing using Go Office (Cafe)

I have since found that the problem was caused by empty cells in the crosstab, mostly from crosstab spaces used to format the output. If there are crosstab spaces or intersections with defined contents but nothing present then this error gets returned. Solution is simply to unlock the report and place a blank text item in the cells.
