When the .mpg file (copied to the hard drive from cd) is imported into a bin it will play fine in the little bin preview window, but, when you drag the clip onto the timeline, it drops some frames and duplicates others. So, when you play the clip it appears jerky. Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?..

The problem is probably the third word in your sentence: "mpg"

Premiere does not do well with MPG files.

Can you use some other application to convert them to AVI files or Quicktime files? If your computer is pretty new, you probably have some form of shovelware video editing software on there -- try using that for the conversion.
