Hi, I've got a home computer with windows server 2000 on and a laptop with Win Xp Pro on.

the 2000 machine is on Workgroup 'MSHOME' the sanme as the Xp machine, but the dont seem to be able to see each other

the 2000 machine doesnt get a responce when u ping the xp machine. but the xp machine gets a responce when u ping the 2000 machine.

im happy with the setup of the xp machine, because when at work i can connect to other xp machine fine with no problems

Any thoughts or advice will be appreciated.

yeh im running win xp sp 2 but the firewall is disabled

How are they connected? Directly to each other, or through a router/switch/hub?

Are the gateways i.p's configured on both?

They are both connected to a router.

Im not exactly sure what u mean by the last point but i can tell u they are both set to 'Obtain an IP Address automatically' and 'Obtain an DNS server automatically'

originally the win 2000 server machine was setup as a domain server but as its just on a home computer Ive changed it to be long to the workgroup 'MSHOME', im not sure if this has cause a problem, i.e security wise. My Xp machine works fine at work in the workgroup 'MSHOME'

If its a linksys router use the gateway 192.168.1.1

When your computer "obtain an ip address automatically" or the dns servers they need to know what server to get the "ip/dns address" from.

I think in Windows XP in the tcp/ip properties junk you will find an "advance" tab where u can specify a gateway.

Also in XP you can type in command prompt

ipconfig /all

to view all the network info (including a gateway).

ipconfig /release

to release your connection from the router,

ipconfig /renew

to get a new address from your router.

When you get a new address assigned, it should not be a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address. By default (which I assumed you left it), it should be a 192.168.xxx.xxx address

Is this what you have?

Hi
I've done what you have said but had no success

Just a couple of things:
Comp 1 - Windows 2000 Server - 'Matt-Home' - IP 192.168.1.68
Comp 2 - Windows XP Pro - 'Matt-Lappy - IP 192.168.1.65

- When i ping the Matt-Lappy from Matt-Home it says 'Request Timed Out' but i can ping Matt-Home from Matt-Lappy ok

- On My Network Places(Matt-Home) i can see Matt-Lappy but when i try to browse it, it says '\\Matt-Lappy is not
accessible. The network path was not found'

- On My Network Places(Matt-Lappy) when i click on 'View Workgroup Computers' it errors saying 'MSHOME is not accesible You might not have permission to use this network resource... The List of esrvers for this workgroup is not currently available'

this is really confusing because as ive mentioned earlier Matt-Lappy works fine on works network which is using MSHOME workgroup

hi,

think ive sussed it, I've got Norton Internet Security installed. Ive disabled it and im all working fine now

thanks for your help, its appreciated.

For some reason it must conflict with Windows2000 Server but not XP

Thanks again

no problem, i run into things like that all the time. Something small you overlook!
