(Probably) Easy Apache Question

This will probably be a quick answer, but since I'm a Linux newbie, I haven't found the solution yet.

My Suse 7.0 came with Apache. I installed a later version, 1.3.22, and it seemed to install OK in the /usr/local/apache directory.

The problem is that when I try to run either httpd or apachectl, it is still pointing to the old install and the httpd in /usr/sbin. I tried copying the new httpd file into usr/sbin, but, not surprisingly, it didn't work.

Is there an easy way to either blow away the original installation, or is there a configuration file I can modify to point to the new installation? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Since you installed Apache from the install CD, using the YAST package manager, you should un-install it, using the same package manager...

When you installed the new version on top of the old version, it probably placed the executables in different directories...

So, when you attempt to start apache, it starts the first version that it finds... (depending on your PATH statement...)

If you remove the old version, it should remove the old executables also...

After removing the old executables, it should then only find the new executables, and should start the new version, when you execute apachectl start or restart...

That seemed to do the trick. There are still a few installation settings I must have hosed on the SSL set-up, but that's another thread. Thanks a lot.
