Could the following be done as a temporary and quick backup?
And will the copied Priv.edb be of use incase my defrag crashes the exchange server?

1. Stop the Exchange server 5.5.
2. copy the Priv.edb to another folder or server.
3. paste the copied Priv.edb to a folder on another Exchange server 5.5.

Any thoughts?

"quick" depends on the size of priv.edb, but yes - you can do that. You should also copy your transaction logs and pub.edb if you use public folders. The copied files will only be of use if the server they are to be used on has the smae SP level, same org name and same site name as the original server - lest I forget, the services should run under the same account as the original server as well.

Oh - make sure you have at least twice the disk space for your defrag.
