printing with nt4 print server

I have an nt4.0 server managing my print services. There are 26 hp4050 printers using hp jet directcards with tcp/ip addresses. I am using the LPR print monitor

my problem....

only one user can print at a time.
in other words, if user "a" is printing 40 pages on print device #1, user "b" cannot print to print device #2 till the job is done running on #1. With 450 users it becomes a nightmare.
Any ideas?

have you got spooling on anywhere (either client or server)? If you have jetdirects why are you printing to the IP port? They have a great utility to print straight to the printer which gets rid of most problems.

I have a similar setup and I don't get this problem. What NT SP do you run?

I am using SP6a
I used to have the users print directly to the printers but I had to limit permissions to the printers due to abuse. (I would have let the abusers find new employment, but not my choice)
Spooling is done on the server the clients do no spooling.

HP's has a utility called JetAdmin that until recently (Well, the last JetDirect I got came with different software anyway.) shipped with all JetDirect units. Install it if it's not already on the server, and re-add the printers to the server, Local Install, specify a new port, and choose HP Jetdirect Port. Then just enter in the IP of the device in simple setup, and the utility sets it up for you. When you share it, you can still specify who can and can't print to it. We have dozens of printers set up this way and it works beautifully. Marc Creviere

For fault tolerance, I also suggest installing another print server.
This is not directly related to your question but I think that if you do it now, you'll thank yourself sometime in the future.
