Hi all,

We have recently migrated from Metaframe 1.8 to Metaframe 3.0.
We were using Uniprint before with all our metaframe users, but of course now we have to upgrade since our older version of uniprint is not compatible with metaframe 3.0. We have contacted resellers over here, and the price per server (we have two doing load balancing) is over a thousand two hundred euros....

I'd like to know what solutions other companies use for printing out of Metaframe, and whether there is anything cheaper and/or better than Uniprint. Any kind of feedback would be greatly appreciated, as we are waiting to put users on the new metaframe farm due to this uniprint issue.

Thanks,

Hi,

I just install the PCL5e/PCL6/PS drivers that are specific with that printer. Without all the toolboxes etc and have loads of drivers, depends on your clients and their printers!

However, for my MPS3 roll out I'll be using the UPD driver. It all looks far better when MPS4 comes out and it's redefined printing.

Hope this helps!
Carl.

Thanks Carl,

Yes I know about using the UPD drivers, but the one think lacking which is present in uniprint is compression....

Plus using the UDP drivers would mean that we would have to set up MPS3 for all our offices abroad and their different printers..

hi all,

ok we've been using the Universal drivers present with Metaframe 3.0, and all seems to be working fine... well almost.

We have a printer which is giving us a little trouble. When a person who is next to the printer prints, the pages come out right away. When someone else in metaframe wants to print onto that printer, the pages come out one by one (with a pause in the middle)

The printer is on a LAN and is configured on both pcs the same way.

I am going to try to print from the users local machine (outside of metaframe) and see if the same problem persists on that printer. If it does, then it is not a metaframe problem. If not, well i'll get back to you lot,

cheers,

Is it a network printer, i.e. a jetdirect or whatever ?

IF not then I might suggest setting it up this way.

yeah it's a network printer, with it's own ip etc,

Then create a q for it on a f&p server and then import it into the farm. If needed create q on anything but 9x systems and import it. You can then hand it out to those y=users who require to use it.

Can I assume you can set up a queue.

In the CMC click on printer mangement, on the lefthand side.

Then click tab for network printers. Then right click lower pane and import a network print server. You want to give the name of the server and an administrative account for that server.

It will import that print server into the farm.

To make it go slightly more quickly you want to right click on printer management and update printers and drivers.

Once the printer can be vived in the CMC, under printer management in printers. You can the assign users to that printer by double clicking the printer in the right hand pane.

rotaman, you might also check the Windows settings for that user who is having slow print jobs with Citrix while his LAN buddy isn't. Check the ADVANCED tab under printer properties to make sure that ENABLE ADVANCED PRINTING FEATURES is NOT selected. This makes the print jobs take longer to generate during a Citrix session.

Thanks for your responses, i will try these suggestions tomorrow and keep you posted on the results.

cheers!
