Printing a Timeline

Hi all,
My wife has undertaken a project to co-write the history of our local school. As part of that project she wishes to create and print a timeline of the all the teachers and head teachers and when they worked at the school. The school has been in existence for about 120 years.

She wants to have the decades running across the top of the page(s) with details of the teacher in timelines below.

I'm guessing that I might be able to set this up in Excel (possibly as some sort of a graph?), but am wondering if there are any better/quicker/less painful(!) ways of doing this.

Making time-charts is a nuisance in Excel. I use the software SmartDraw. View at Of course you would have to buy the program or get a copy from someone... or from Kazaa...
