I have a computer running Windows XP Pro. I had a brother laser printer that worked perfectly but upgraded to an all in one samsung laser SCX-4300. But I cant get it to install properly. I run the driver install program (that i downloaded from samsung site) it goes thru the install process but sets it as 'print to file' so i changed it to USB but it says 'document failed to print'everytime i try to print.
I thought the problem may have been with the printer but it installed fine on my laptop, so the problem must be with my computer, but other USB devices (a modem) work fine.

I would be grateful for any help! TIA

Win XP Pro SP3
Soltek SL-75FRN2-RL (mainboard) - as soltek have gone bust will this hamper compatability with SP3 etc?

Have you tried a different USB cable?

BIOS update?
Maybe disable legacy usb.

hey, thanks for the responses, sorry Ive taken a while to respond.

I had tried a diff cable. I updated the Nvidia drivers to the newest I could find, I couldnt find newer BIOS tho. None of this fixed the problem. Any other ideas? In device manager the usb controllers are OPENHCD, can I update these?

If it would not install using two different connection types then it would be sommething in windows causing the failure.
At a command prompt (start-->Run type in CMD and select OK.) In the command prompt type in
net start spooler
do you get an error? If it returns theat the spooler is already running let us know.

Did you delete your old printer? Some printer drivers decide they own the USB port their printer is connected on, and won't see the printer if it is attached elsewhere.

I trust you have tried different USB ports as well?

The installation instructions for your printer say the new hardware wizard should come up when you restart the system with the printer connected and turned on, then you should cancel it and run their install instead. Is this what happened in your case?

tlcscousin: I meant I had tried two different USB cables, not different connection types. As the printer installs fine on other computers it must be a windows/hardware problem.

Ive tried a few diff USB ports, and uninstalled my old printer, I even deleted the USB stack aand let it reinstall but none of this helped. I have installed it using the samsung .exe, not the windows new hardware.

I really appreciate all your help but it may be time to hold my hands up and conceed, I can use my laptop at work instead.

Thanks to all who contributed!

Does the computer see other USB devices when you plug them in?
Have you tried restarting the spooler?

When I have run into problems like this, I usually do the following.

1) Unplug the printer from the USB.
2) Un-install the printer drivers.
3) Un-install the USB drivers in the device manager; then do a scan for changes and it will re-install them.
4) Install the printer drivers FIRST.
5) Plug in the USB printer. It should give you "Found new hardware", then the printer name, then USB Printing support, etc.

Especially #4 is IMPORTANT. Many times people plug in the USB printer first, and windows installs its own drivers. Then they install the printer drivers, and the USB printer is already assigned, so it can't find it. Sounds like your problem, if it's setting to print to file.

Strange process

Stop the print spool in services.
Drill to Windows - System 32 - Spool - drivers.
In here, delete the folders/files. Some may or may not delete, just delete what you can.

Reboot and try reinstalling the printer.

thanks for the suggestions but my boss said in polite terms that I should stop messing and swap computers. Its really annoyed me that I couldnt sort it.

Anyway, the printer is working ok on a laptop but everytime windows ssloads its says 'found new hardware' etc. any ideas??

I'm working on a somewhat related issue in Windows 7. I think I'll see if I can find the same folder/file listings as what you mentioned, in Windows 7 as well. I figure it aint gonna hurt at this point. [wink]

gbaughma: absolutely agree with you about #4. Why then do printer manufacturers sometimes - not always, but sometimes - instruct on plugging in printer first [ponder]

I can think of a couple of reasons.

If it's a parallel printer, you would want to plug it in before you turn on the power.

If it's a network printer, you would want it plugged into the network so that the software can find it.

USB Printers? Maybe if the manufacturer was POSITIVE that stock Windows was going to find it; but that's more the exception than the rule.
