I have a LaserJet 1300 which is installed on LPT1 of a Win 98 machine. The printer is shared and works for 4 other people in the office, of those 4 other people two have 98 machines and two have XP. However one other XP machine is not able to connect to the printer. I can see the printer share on the 98 machine and acts like it wants to install. The XP box informes me that the proper driver is not installed on the server and then proceeds to install the driver on the local machine. It then adds the printer, but it will never make a successful connection to it and print print.

So the driver loads, and you actually see the printer in your printers folder, correct? You have tried a regular test page, correct?

If by some chance you are running on dhcp, try assigning static ip addresses, reboot everything, and try again.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Correct, you see the pirnter in the printers folder.

I am sorry I just don't see where setting a static IP would do anything. The name resolved to an IP just fine through our DNS. You are able to get into any another share on the 98 machine from the XP machine. It's just the printer that does not work. If I am missing something, if you could give me the basis of why you suggest that...

When you install the printer driver on your XP machine are you logged in as the administrator????? Sometimes drivers will act like they are installed, but don't work unless you install under the Admin account.

Also try rebooting both the printer and the XP box. Also, if you are still using DHCP, try releasing and renewing your IP address on the XP box. Then reboot.

Can you ping the printer from your xp machine? If not, it almost sounds like DHCP isn't renewing the ip address.

Both machines can ping each other just fine by the name resolving through DNS and through pinging the IP address directly. Both can connect to each other just fine by name or IP address.

I was connected as the administrator. The XP machine has other printers that I installed at the same time that work without any trouble. Those printers happen to be connected to other Win XP boxes.

Whenever stuff like that happens - I just install the ipx protocol on both machines, and everything just magically begins working like they should! On WinXP, NetBIOS is installed by default, on Win98 you have to set the checkbox to use NetBIOS in the ipx properties. Also set the frame type in the ipx properties to 802.2 for each machine (as opposed to auto select).

I suggest it because I see weird stuff all the time on dhcp networks, its a 5 minute test, populate the numbers on each machine and reboot. If it works great, if not, I'll be happy to offer another suggestion. Its up to you.
