Printer port slowdown ????

I have installed my scanner through my parallel port and it won't work. If I install my Zip Drive through the same parallel port, it works, but is about 10 times slower than on my old system. I have tried scanner and Zip drive on my other PC and they are fine.

1) Why won't the scanner work ?
2) Why is the zip drive so slow now ?

I bet the two things are related, but how ????
