Printer not working - not drivers or hardware

I can make a print work in DOS, but not in Windows 98. I've reinstalled the drivers, reintroduced the hardware... basically everything I can think of, but to no avail.
For instance: I send a Word document to print, no print dialog box appears, but the system definately appears to be under the impression that it has printed & everything is hunky-dory.
Can anyone suggest another tactic I can try? Hardware isn't really my field...

It might help if you deleted the printer and the parallel port hardware, then let it reinstall on the next boot.

What make and model of printer are you using? Downloaded the latest drivers from manufacturer's website? After reinstalling the printer, do we assume a TEST PRINT doesn't work either? Do you just have the one parallel port? What is it set up as in the BIOS? I/O 278, 378, EPP, ECP, etc., etc? Are you printing in DOS to the default port or specifically to LPT1? Does your printer installation show the correct port? Checked to see if any conflicts shown in DEVICE MANAGER? Tried a different parallel cable?
