I have a server acting as my printer server for about 25 printers around the network.

I tried to add a new printer yesterday but the HP Netork printer wizard can't find the printer, neither can the Add printer wizard.

My network has fixed IP's but even when I use the existing IP of the external jetdirect card or its hardware address, it can't find the printer. I have used add printer, network printer install, jetadmin. All fail.

I have tried pinging the IP in use and it pings the wrong machine. using ping -a it comes back with a pc somewhere else on the network. Is this a WINS database problem, or DNS. I thought it may be an error in the hosts file, but the print server doesn't have one.

HELP!!!!!!!

Go to the printer. And print out the IP address for this printer.

Go to the server. Try to ping the IP. Does it respond?

When adding a printer to a print server, you should be targeting an exact IP address rather then using a netbios or host name. So, WINS and DNS should not be relevant...

Tried that mate, if I ping the printer I get a response but the -a ping option tells me that it is not the printer that is responding, it gives me the name of a pc somewhere else on the network. Hence my confusion.........

Sounds like you have two machines with the same IP the Printer and a Workstation. Change either one and you should be ok.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Fixed....ish.

Went back to basics and did things the old way. Manually added the printer port, then used add printer directly to the new port.

All working.... except that the print job is spooling very very slowly so clearly it is not entirely happy. No IP conflicts reported so presume it is something other than a problem with the IP address.
