I have a design team here at work. They use Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Im looking into new HP printers for these people. Something like the designjet/50ps or the designjet 500ps. The specs for the 50ps say it has 16MB of RAM. Is this sufficient? I dont think it can be increased. Oh it also must be able to connect to our ethernet. Help.

You're in luck! I used to sell HP printers back in the day. =). You're best bet is to go with the DJ500ps. The biggest difference is the memory max. The 50ps memory max is only 16MB. The 500ps is 160MB. 16MB is ideal for 1 person doing smaller graphics file printing. Realistically if you are printing alot and if the print jobs are very large I would get more then 16MB. For example the average personal photograph saved as .bmp is about 4 or 5 MEGS. Now if you are doing large detailed pictures and have several people trying to print you can obviously see there will be a problem. Printer memory isn't cheap (about $80 for 16MB on average) so you will have to weigh the pro's and con's. To calculate how much memory you have you will have to judge the average print file size and mulitply that by how many users you have. Also consider how often they will need to print during a day. The 500ps is network ready also so that will cut some of the costs down. Does that help?
