We have some public use computers that many individuals log on to. Each user has to install printers while they are logged on. I would like the printer(s) to be installed once for all. Is there a way to do this? The printer is a network printer, queue is on an NT4 server. No Win2K servers yet. I am looking for a solution that does not require logon scripts, but reg changes are OK.

If the users install it once does it not stay installed for them from then on? If so then create a profile template that every new user gets that has a printer installed.

Animus,

2 easiest ways to do this i can think of off the top of my head:

1) You can install a local printer pointing to a network printer as administrator that will be seen as "local" for all users that logon, and they cant change or delete it..sound good?

go to "add printer"..select "local printer", but choose "Standard TCP/IP Port" instead of LPT1..then for name or ip enter the UNC pathname for the printer or ip address, and continue on for the rest of the instructions.

If you need more help let us know - but thats the best way to "fool" the OS into thinking a network printer is actually local, and your non-admin rights users cant change or delete any settings on that printer you set unless you grant them access to. Adding a printer this way treats the network printer as if it were locally connected to your machine..beneficial in many ways including being available to all users.

2) You could also create a profile you want them to use and use the "Copy to" feature to apply it to all users who login after you configure a default profile. Just create the profile as you want them to see it, and copy to the default user profile with permissions for "everyone" to use that profile. In doing so - all users who login will see the exact same desktop/programs/settings you setup for them.

That should take care of exactly what you want - hope it works for ya.

Option 1 sounds great, but the UNC field doesnt accept backslashes. I thought the UNC should be like \\LD09\LJ1100 which is the printer description ?

DOH!
Sorry about that..thats what I get for stayin up too late and not thinking things through from the top of my head. ;)

Instead of choosing "standard TCP/IP port", choose to create a new "Local Port", THEN enter the UNC path to the printer in the "printer port name" box. CHoose your driver, then enter the display name you want all users to see in the final description box.

You shouldnt have any problems now..:\

Works perfect. I suppose TCP/IP port is for adding a printer that is directly connected to the cable ?

Yup -

It's for connecting via TCP/IP directly to a computer with an IP address. Same theory..just treating the TCP/IP port like a LPT1 printer cable. :) pbxman
