When trying to install a printer using the setup wizard we are getting the following error, this is for local and network printer and seems to be any printer type - we are supplying the drivers from the manufacturers, the OS is Win98SE;
"Windows was unable to gather file information for this printer. Quit all programs and then try again. If the problem persists restart windows and try again."

Disconnect the printer from the comptr. Run the CD with the printer driver and program. Shut down comptr. Reconncect the printer and start the comptr.

What model printer are you installing? USB or Parallel connection??

If using LPT1, make sure your parallel port is properly configured in the BIOS (either ECP or EPP should work)

Hi Guys
Thanks oldcomptrguy I have tried all the things that you have mentioned before I posted this.
The printer we have is a Lexmark 2480, but we get the same error with an OKI 3810 which was working on the PC before we deleted the drivers?!?£$% We are using the parrallel connection which has been working fine until this.
Any ideas anyone?
Apparently Microsoft have never had this error message before...

Make sure that your printer and your operating system are compatible. Some printers will no longer work on Windows XP. Check for exclamation points indicating problems beside the drivers in Control Panel/System area. If USB, ensure you have Windows USB capability installed. Check for Windows updates that might be needed. Even if you have the drivers from the manufacturer, try downloading a new set from their site that might have updates. If USB, some makers supply a USB uninstall program that fully uninstalls the USB, so you can reinstall it. USB must be installed exactly to instructions as they can be finicky. Good Luck.
