Senario: 13 X W95 & 98 workstations networked to a NT4 Server.

Some of the workstations have locally connected printers which are shared on the N/W.

When I changed the name of one of the workstations, its locally connected printer could not (obviously) be "seen" by another workstation. At the remote workstation, if I click "Properties" for the printer, I get "Network Path can not be Found" message.

I deleted that printer and reinstalled it pointing to the "correct" network path.

Question: Even though the "Properties" for the printer is not displayed, is it possible to change the network path, short of a registry edit?

Just curious. Thanks.

Can you Map the drive / printer using UNC successfully?

TT4U,

Thanks for the post.

Yes, I reinstalled the printer pointing to the "new" UNC and deleted the printer pointing to the old W/S name. All now working.

My question was pure curiosity, namely:

If a W/S had, say, 2 LPT ports you can swap the printers around just by going the the Ports tab of the Properties page.

However, if a printer is not locally connected and the current UNC for the printer is invalid, then, on selecting Properties for that printer, an error message is generated "Network Path can not be Found" and the properties page is not displayed.

So, the question is: Can I change the UNC of the printer without Install/Delete and without using RegEdit?

Thanks,

Greg.

You "might" be able to do something using System Policy Editor (Basically a GUI of Regedit and allows Policy changes) - be very careful, especially when it's used concerning the NT Server and "It's" own PDC/BDC and the way it doles out Profiles to the clients (User.dat User.adm, User.man, etc, etc).
On the 98 CDROM go to \tools\reskit\help\rk98book.chm and search in the search box for "WMI" - the hits will include "Using System and Remote Administration Tools" - Review and see if you think feasable....there's a ton of info in there, concerning all these quetions, and using Domains with an NT Server makes it all the more intricate
