Ummm, still using NT4, and have plenty of XP clients who are able to add a network printer without being prompted for the XP driver.
From a PC with Domain Admin rights, click start, run \\server name, replacing server name with print server. Then open printers and faxes (XP speak),and click on file, server properties. Then add drivers, and you should be able to figure out the situation from here.
I have been frustrated at times, when I had already installed a NT4 driver, which also includes W2000, then tried to add XP, which also includes W2000. Baffles me, but I just add the XP driver, and let it add the W2000. We have 99% HP LJ's, so this may be related to HP.
Ummm, best download the XP/2000 driver, unzip if nessecary, and have it ready for install--located on a share or local disk visible to the print server.
All this won't work unless you have domain admin rights, and are working from a XP (and probably a 2000) PC.
It's so nice now when someone asks me to install a printer...I say check the label on the printer, then click start... one less task form me!
Now if I could just figure out how to install a blasted SP on NT4 server, before I install it on a server...new machine, has a raid controller, but I think I need large hard disk support, and the raid controller available. Scared of switching away from NT, and tired of staying with it.
