Hi all- I'm noticing a lot of confusion regarding PRI service versus T1 Voice service in the people I work with and myself to be honest. So I was wondering if anyone might have the answers (or be willing to answer) the following:

1- Where is a good place on the web just to read up on general PRI service information (how it works, why is it different, what value/issues do you get from working with it).

2- A list of Avaya circuit packs that will and won't work for PRI service.

3- How to manage the D-Channel for 767Es by using a TN464 as part of a trunk group. (AKA- Can you do this? Since I have 12 767Es and 4 464Fs this is of great value to me...).

4- Just general dos, don'ts and war stories about PRI service.

Thanks to any and all who contribute, it's appriciated -Novwin

The link below takes you to an Avaya document that describes all of the T-1/PRI services. Although it's 11 years old, from the network perspective, not a lot has changed. From the PBX side the only thing that has changed is some of the hardware.

As far as which packs can you use for what depends on which system you are working on. G3r, S8500, & S8700 all require TN464 circuit packs for any ISDN-PRI circuit that has a 'D' channel. You can use TN464, TN767, & TN2313 boards for circuits that have a 'B' channels. G3si and Prologix get a little trickier. Prior to V7 you had 2 choices for circuits that contain a 'D' channel. You could use any DS-1 board (TN464 or TN767) in conjunction with a port on a Processor Interface board (TN765) or have Avaya enable the 'PRI over PACCON' feature which requires that the Packet Bus (TN778) be installed and uses TN464 boards exclusively. 'PRI over PACCON' requires that ALL ISDN-PRI circuits use this feature. You can't mix & match. V7 and above systems have the packet bus standard and use a different method of connecting the 'D' channel to the processor. V7 can use either a TN767 or TN464 for ISDN-PRI circuits. V8 and above can use TN464, TN767, or TN2313 boards. To make a long story short; TN464 boards are universal and can be used for anything but are more expensive. With a little planning you can save yourself some money.

TN767 and TN2313 use the TDM bus for D-Channel, the TN464 uses the Packet Bus. The reason the S8700, S8500, and S8300 cannot use the TN767 and TN2313 is because the processors have no TDM connection to the Media Gateways, only IP, which is packet bus.

One other consideration you need to address is that the G3i and G3si will only support 10 D-Channels on the TDM bus in a single port network configuration. So you could only use 10 of your TN767s for D-channel signaling if you have G3i or G3si.

Hi Novwin,
I was also looking into PRI as an option. Check out
thread690-918539 to see some of the opinions of our experts when I asked about PRI! It would be a big expense for me to upgrade from a G3siV6 and I would still need to keep and pay for some of my old lines for backup. Also you can search under DS1 or PRI to get some more info on this site.
