Previous Filter criteria reappears

When I use Filter-by-Form and enter selection criteria in one of several active fields, the criteria reappears when I re-filter. Does anyone know how I can blank out the previous criteria so my users don't inadvertently resubmit criteria in a field that on the second filtering should be blank, please? Cheers!
