I know this is more of an Outlook question, but you can't support Exchange without supporting Outlook, so here goes.

If I open an attachment from within an e-mail, it launches Word. I can edit and save the document. The edited attachment is still part of the e-mail. And I no longer have the unedited original. And when the email gets deleted due to retension maintenance tasks, of course the attachment goes with it.

I have trained and trained and reminded users to Save As or only Save, not open attachments, but you know users.

So is there a way via GPO, reg hack, etc to prevent the "Open" attachment option, thereby forcing them to do a save?

Simpler solution is to have your users STOP doing attachments. Instead have them send links to the original file which you can then set read only rights to.

Or for an easier interfact for your users, start using SharePoint which has document versioning control as well as the ability to check a document out so all users just get a read only view. Again here I would suggest simply sending links and not attachments.

I hope you find this post helpful.
