does anyone have any ideas why my prefetch folder quit working.two days ago programs after opening them quit being placed it there i empited the folder and after two days of using my computer the folder is still empty.i have looked at the registry key it is set at 3 for enable.
i am running xp home edition clean install, service pak 1 installed a few weeks ago.
thanks for the help.

The fix seems to be enable and set Task Scheduler to Automatic.
(Start/Run/services.msc)

tried your suggestion still does not work.if anyone can think of anything else let me know.
thanks for trying.

What are the permissions for access to the prefetch folder?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Prefetch.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

xpwatcher:
Plz post back if linney's suggestions work and which ones...it's a universal problem with SP1!
(for which I have seen no definitive answer and would like to)

set the task scheduler back to automatic started it.at first it did not work.still nothing in prefetch folder.did a reboot and it's back to working.shutdown rebooted at night prefetch is back to normal.also up at blkviper.com in his service configuration page for xp he states if task scheduler is disabled prefetch won't work.
Thanks to everyone that helped.

I've been having this same problem too. But I've always had Task Scheduler set to enabled and automatic.

I haven't had any Prefetch files since SP1 either. One thing I've noticed is that it depends on the Remote Procedure Call service (RPC) which is also set to automatic (as it pretty much has to be), but there is also a service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator which I had set to manual. BlkViper says it's not needed, and it takes up 1.2mb of memory when running. But does anyone know anything about this?

I'm also trying the "scf /scannow" thing. I guess I'll keep you guys posted.

Peace

Morning Boo:

sfc /scannow might undo lots of the usefulness of SP1 (like that would be a bad thing!). It may be improved in this iteration, (XP's that is), but the older app saw a changed file as corrupt and wanted to change it.
The workaround I see for those who're having deep-dish problems with SP1 (have none idea why I've been spared) is to do an inplace install...(the old overwrite of the OS)...and then apply selectively the security patches and everything else up to SP1.
Again I must say I'm not sure prefetch is all that important...I've read some ppl saying you want to clean it out once in awhile to improve performance. MAYBE the folx who devised all this code decided the same thing...just didn't bother to tell us.

now that i look back at my prefetch prob, after i installed sp1 the computer ran fine.but i noticed later that my prefetch folder was completely gone.never thought that the service pak might of caused it.i did a repair of win xp,i have the service pak on cd reloaded it everything been fine til last weekend.you might want to check the registry key to make sure it's set to 3 for enable
1.open the run box type regedit
2.goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\SESSION MANAGER\MEMORYMANAGEMENT\PREFETCHPARAMETERS\ENABLEPREFETCHER
3.set the value to either 0-disable,1-app launch prefetch
2-boot prefetch,3-both (3 is recommended)
4.reboot
got this from hope this help's

I always understood that using Sfc /Scannow after installing SP1 it would use the SP1 files to repair the System Files rather than undo SP1 and revert to a pre SP1 setup. The only way to remove SP1 is to have used the Archive old files option at SP1 install then use the Add/Remove to uninstall SP1.
