Preferences Causing 4.79 and 4.8 to Freeze

I installed Communicator 4.8 and when I go into Prefeences, the program locks up on me. I uninstalled 4.8 and went back to 4.79. I'm getting the same hang up, though 4.79 worked fine before I upgraded to 4.8.
I have run Norton WinDoctor to see if something was amiss, but the system is coming up clean.
The only other thing I have done to the system in the last 2 days was to upgrade my MS Office 2000 with its Service Pack 1. I can't see why the Office upgrade should have any effect on Netscape, but stranger things have happened.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
