hi
i have set up a vpn based on pptp and it's working fine
there is just one prob - in one remote distination there are 2 machines behind an adsl modem with integrated ethernet switch, when only one is conneted it is working, but when both try to connect, all packets in the gre tunnel between my office and this remote office are discarded - the packets are out of order
i assume that this is caused bacause there is only one gre tunnel between my router and the remote router, but two klients are sending over this tunnel without knowing about each other and a dedicated gateway in the remote office would solve this
is this correct or there is some other prob?

Your modem is acting as a NAT router. In order for this to work, it must be able to correctly track outbound PPTP connections and the corresponding return connection. Many older (and even some new) routers can't deal with it. Not an easy task and requires some guess work, so even a router that handles it can't guarantee 100% accuracy.

You need something else to handle your NAT. You should be able to switch the modem/router back to modem mode and install another router on your network. Read the docs before you buy to make sure that it supports multiple PPTP tunnels.

i thought about placing a linbox between the remote office machines and modem, this linux will initiate the vpn tunnel and do nating for the workstations
could this be the right way or do i need a hw router with vpn support?
