Hi all -
Just hooked up my new PV 124 Library and Veritas does not see it as a library. I have installed all the veritas drivers for the library on the server & the problem remains. Server is W3K and sees the tape drive as Certance (single tape drive) and an unknown medium changer. Any ideas on how to get Veritas to see it? I just patched veritas with the latest patches also. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Any error in the system log?

Make sure the SCSI id for the library arm is 2 and drive 2 if its SCSI based.

Tape drive is set to SCSI 2, how do I find out what the library arm is set to? I don't seem to be able to find anywhere to configure the library arm specifically. Also no errors in the system logs on this at all.

It it multi-lun? Can you change the library emulation mode?

Not that I can see. I can change the following mode:
Mode
Choose a mode in which the system tapes will be written.

In Random mode, the user (or the backup software) can specify which tape is used and where it goes.

In Sequential mode, when the end of a tape is reached (with either reads or writes), the autoloader will automatically return that tape to its slot and load the next tape into the drive. This continues until the backup software stops accessing the drive or until all of the tapes have been sequentially accessed. The autoloader does not move the media until the host requests the tape drive to unload the tape via a SCSI unload command.

In Sequential Cycle mode, once all tapes have been utilized, the autoloader will begin the sequential access process again starting with the first tape.

Either a power cycle (via the front panel button) or a system reset (via the System Reset command found on the Error Logs and Diagnostics frame) is required for changes to take effect.
Random [Default]
Sequential
Sequential Cycle (Not available in Random mode)

And under Libary Operations all I can do is move tapes, inventory tapes, set picker to home and setup sequential operations.

Just to add a little more info...

when I look at the Certance properties it states the following..Port 2 Bus 0 Target ID 2 LUN 0

I've completely deleted it out of Veritas and then reinstalled it via the veritas drivers, but Veritas continues to see it as a single tape drive. Is there something more on the hardware side that I may need to enable?

Veritas provides drivers for the Drive in the library only. There is only a table in the registry that veritas installs for the library. You would have to goto Tool- backup exec diagnotics and look at the bediag file to see if the library is showing up with a invalid name or offline.

The library should be in Random Mode.

Make sure you have updated SCSI card drivers and its not installed on a RAID controller.

The server that I've put this on does have a RAID3 set up. Prior to hooking the 124 up to this server, I had a 120 PV library that had no issues at all with the RAID set up. Why does the 124 have issues and how do I get around them?

There is no way around it. Symantec Doesnt support tape devices attached to a RAID controller. There are technotes on this. Save your self some time and get a seperate SCSI card. Your hardware has changed it may be talking faster /slower and not getting a response from the library element thus not being detected.

ok - I think I understood you wrong. Yes, this has a RAID 3 in it, but the tape drive is on a 39160 SCSI card. Sorry for the confusion...

Have you rebooted your server since installing Backup Exec? That solved the problem for me when my Backup Exec only saw my PV136T as a single device.

Yeah, rebooted SEVERAL times. Thanks for the advice though. Bob from Dell's forums helped me out and the server is now seeing the 124 correctly, so I just have to figure out why veritas can tell the library to initialize and it will initialize, but nothing else seems to be communicating..)

The fix was installing the following:

Since you got the server to see the library, have you stopped and restarted the Backup Exec services since then?

Yes, did that, but I just rebooted the PV124 and it looks as though that might have been it. It's inventorying a tape that I just put in there, at least it's acting like it. I'll post back with results. Thanks

It looks as though I had an extra tape stuck somewhere in the PV124... Finally got it out and everything is working as expected now. I'll try a backup test and report back.
