PowerTerm runs REAL slow on Pathworks - please help.

I installed Pathworks 7.3 on a XP PC and also on a Win2000 PC. No software was loaded on the VAX - using existing LAT services. With PowerTerm (5.2 I think) both PCS run REAL slow, I do get a username prompt sometimes and can barely log on. After logged on, almost any DCL command terminates the session. Even while logging on, it takes about 45 seconds for a prompt/echo to appear.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
