I recently installed a new graphics card, upgraded to XP, and installed a new HD to my computer. Then I transferred some files from my old HD to the new one. Everything was working perfectly. Then I took the computer home from my mom's house and on the way home the CPU slid from one side of the car to the other hitting the door. Got home connected everything and started it up. Everything was fine I signed in to the desktop and was getting ready to open a program when the screen went black. THe power was still on but there weren't any lights on the front of the cpu. I had to hold in the button to shut it down. Then I tried again...7 more times... and each time it would power up and go through the 1st startup screen and the 2nd, but then it would do the same thing. The fan still runs and I took the cover off to see if anything had come loose. One of the black and white wires(that leads to the power button) was loose so I pushed it back in. Still nothing. PLease if anyone has a clue that would be super.

Manually check (remove and reinsert) all parts that can be inserted. Check the CPU and it's fan to make sure they are tight. Touch all parts to make sure they are tight.

PC's don't like to be transported, things can often come loose.
In this case it sounds like possibly the graphics card but as franklin97355 said, pull out and refit all cards, cables, memory modules and power connectors, each time making sure that they are fully pushed home and correctly seated.

Everything has been checked for connectivity, and all was connected correctly. Any body have any other thoughts?

Did you just "check", or did you actually pull and re-insert the boards, memory, and CPU? The "slide" may have hit hard enough to crack the motherboard. Try with just the power supply, memory, CPU, and video card installed (pull the power and data cables to everything else. It should post to a "no operating system" screen.

Ok I pulled the memory and graphics card, the cpu is connected to the mother board. Tried starting it after that and got the same thing. THen I pulled the data and power to the drives and started it, got this msg: Disk Boot Failure, Insert system disk and press enter.

What does this mean and still how do I get this to work?

OK, we've tested the power supply, CPU, motherboard, memory, and video card. Now hook up the floppy and try to boot with a bootable floppy disk. If OK, shut down > remove floppy disk > and hook up master hard drive. If OK so far, hook up things one-by-one (shutting down between tries) until it quits. The last thing you hook up is the problem. Takes awhile, but necessary to troubleshoot.

When you say bootable floppy do you mean a startup disk to DOS or a Windows XP Setup boot floppy disks (there are 6 of them I think)?

I meant a Windows 98 boot-up floppy. Borrow one, or make one on a Win 98 machine. I keep a couple around for trouble shooting (if the drive is hooked up wrong, it can damage the info on the disk. Make sure the write protect is is "on"). This will boot to a screen asking whether you want CD access or not. Doesn't matter, all we want to do is make sure the floppy drive is functioning. When you find that the floppy drive is OK, go ahead and shut down and hook up the hard drive (remove the floppy disk). The Win 98 disk will work even if you don't have a hard drive hooked up.

OK I unplugged the power and data from the HD, inserted the win 98 startup disk in the connected floppy drive and started it up. Got thissame msg: : Disk Boot Failure, Insert system disk and press enter.

Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the Floppy drive before the hard drive. I've seen some systems set the floppy as the 3rd boot device probably because it's less common now.

Check what aznluvsmc says. If it is first boot device, the next thing we check is the drive itself: the floppy drive has an indicator light on it to show when it is running. Does this light come on (when it is reading the disk) and shut off when through? If it stays on all the time that the computer is on, the data cable is upside down, or shorted. Hang in there - were getting close!

I checked the bios and made the floppy 1st the cd rom 2nd. I retried the win 98 startup disk and got the same msg. Also it said before that Boot from Atapi CDrom:

I looked at the lights on the front as I started it up. The red light comes on when I turn it on near the power button. The 2nd cdrom(burner) lights up yellow for 5-10 secs. The cdrom lights yellow very briefly(2-4 secs) and the floppy never lights up. Doesnt sound like its trying to work either.

Why are the CD Roms coming on at all? We want ONLY the floppy drive hooked up at this time. If the floppy light doesn,t come on at all, the power plug may be "off" one pin (sometimes this will burn out the floppy drive and load down the power supply).

Got the cdroms unplugged. put disk in and started up. The floppy light stayed on from when I turned it on until I turned it off. I could hear it running the whole time (the data had been loosened earlier) I got the same msg as before.

(the data had been loosened earlier)

Is it connected now? If so the data cable is upside down at the drive. Flip it over and try.

ok that worked - I got the win 98 options to startup - was always told the red striped side of the data cord was to be closest to the power cord.

So then I started it up with the HD plugged in and it only got to the 1st regular startup screen before it went black. I never got to the 2nd screen.

Have you tried booting XP into safe mode? (hit F8 just after the machine posts and select safe mode from the menu). The problem could be a corrupted hard disk from the impact with the car door. Might be that XP needs reloading or you have damaged part of your hard disk.

I tried this with the floppy and HD in first and it only got to the 1st start up screen. Never saw a safe mode option screen. So I unplugged the floppy since it seems that caused the 2nd startup screen to disappeared as earlier noted. Started it up got to the 2nd startup screen and pressed F8. There were so many choices so I chose plain old safe mode. Then the screen went blank again....
