We have office 97 and using powerpoint with a template. This template is stored in the office workgroup template location. This was set from the file locations in word. The wrod templates work fine, and about 1/2 the pcs work fine in powerpoint. The other 1/2 get this error message when you try and create a new powerpoint document from a template.

Code:
Connot find the office templates because they were not installed or have been deleted or moved from the remplates location. To install them, run the setup program for office or an office program. To change the templates location, use the Settings tab in the Customize dialog box (Office shortcut bar menu) or the file locations tab in the Options dialog box in Word

This message comes up before the list of templates.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?

My first question would be, are these templates stored on a network drive, or on each PC? If on a network drive, make sure each of the PCs has access to that drive.

If on each PC, there are a couple of things you need to check. First, make sure the template files are stored in exactly the same location on each PC. Don't just look at the folder name, check the entire path. For example, look for a path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates and compare it to c:\Windows\Profiles\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates, replacing "username" with the name of the logged in user. It's easy to get these two locations confused. Maybe the templates are actually in one while the template location is pointing to the other.

There are stored on a network drive and all the PCs can see them as they are in the same location as the Word templates which is working fine. The file must exist as some PCs work, but others do not. If I point the User Template path to the location of the template powerpoint then starts to work, but we want to use the Workgroup Template path the the file only needs to be stored in one location. (Each user has their on set of User Templates)

Sorry for the two post at once, but will writting the last one I thought of something else to test. If I have a template in the User Templates location powerpoint will then work displaying both the User Template and the Workgroup Template. The odd thing is that not all machines fail even when there was not User Templates.

Sorry, Robert, I've about run out of ideas. You've confirmed that the PCs that fail do indeed have access rights to those folders, and this would seem to be confirmed by their being able to use the Word templates. You've also confirmed that the individual PCs are all pointing to the same path/folder. My last question would be, are all the PCs running the same version of PowerPoint? That's the only other thing I can think of that may be causing the problem.

Perhaps someone else will jump in with additional suggestions.

Good Luck!

You don't want to hear this.

Find the folder called clipart; server or hard driver, wherever it is.

Now, go into the registry and do a look-see for "clipart" and be sure it's pointing to the same folder.

What a mess it is.
