hi all

ok this is my system

850mhz Amd Athlon
Abit k7 Raid Motherboard
300watt psu
765mb Ram
creative sound blaster live
other stuff hd etc
and win98 se

the problem is when I shut down my machine. The computer software powers down fine but the seems to be power still going through the machine, ie there is a buzzing sound from my speakers and the power led is still slightly on, thus I cannot make use of the atx power functions, so I always have to switch of the machine by the mains.

the is also a problem when I boot up my machine, it doesn't seem to reconise the key board unless I take it out of the ps2 socket plug it back in during the boot up.

Can any one help me on finding the solution to this problem. I don't think it is a software problem more a hardware, but what? as I don't want to pay out on unwanted items.

thanks

Sounds like the MB is going bad. How old is the system, and how long has it been doing this?

It might be possible that the motherboard is not managing the power from the power supply correctly.

Did it start doing this after a storm? If so, it could have been caused by lightening.

hi Seegee

Its been happening since I got the system, about 12months.

U know it's been one of those jobs that your fix later, well later has now come!!!

Do u recon I get another psu (16gbp) and see if that is the problem, I think I may have a old 250watt psu somewhere or mate has one. Would that do any dammage to the system?

If the 250watt works could I come to the quick conclusion that its the psu?

thanks 4 the help

Most PC's today have at least a 300 watt PSU. If you replace it I would use a 300 watt. 250 may work fine for now, but if you decide to add stuff to the system later, you may find you'll have to replace the PSU.

It could also be the motherboard recievign interference from something else.

Have a look in your BIOS for powerdown mode

S1 - Runs standby with low processor usage (Which I think is what u are),

S3 STR (Suspend to RAM) will turn the machine off, but power will keep the system in memory.

Hope this helps, let me know.

Thanks,

Fat

Hi Seegee, Fat

First I updated my bois and cleared my CMOS but this had no effect so I was lucky enough to get my hands on a tried and tested psu. Banged this into the machine but again no joy there.

So I decided to strip the machine back to the start. I re-mounted the motherboard in the case a plug in the psu with just the voodoo AGP card + HD. This worked fine :)

so I slowly built up component by component. but on pluging in my modem I the machine would not power off again!!! I can't remember the modem right now (Rockwell maybe) So that seems to be the problem. The Modem was working fine back on my AMD k6 II 450mhz on a 250w psu I can't see why it does not like the new spec. To check that is was not the motherboard I tried it in a different PCI slot.

Do you have any ideas on why the modem will not work with the more powerfull machine???

thanks once again

check your bios and make sure there is no wakeup on modem setting that is turned on.
