Working on a HP Pavilion that seemed to have a bad power supply, nothing would turn on. I replaced the power supply but know the computer will power up, atleast the fans start up, but I get no video, no LED lights, no beeps, & the CD-ROM doesn't seem to have power as there is no lights and it will not eject. I was wondering if I may have gotten a bad power supply or is there more to the problems? I have check & double checked the connections and all seem good.

Thanks for any suggestions &/or answers!!

at least the fans start up...". Which fans? PSU? CPU cooler?

Check with a voltmeter to see you're getting the right levels on all PSU rails when it's under load.

Disconnect ALL data cables to the motherboard, remove any add-in cards, including video, disconnect power cables to ALL drives. Pull out keyboard and mouse, and disconnect front panel headers, except for system speaker (unless it's on the mobo). Identify the (momentary) Power Switch connections and use a small-bladed screwdriver to short the terminals, in an attempt to start it up. (This eliminates any front panel power switch failure).

Try removing and reseating the memory, and the CPU. CPU surfaces will require cleaning and fresh compound of course.

Finally, take the motherboard right out of the case, place it on some cardboard or other insulating material and try starting it up again. This will eliminate any short circuits from wayward screws underneath the board when it's mounted in the case.

Given the opportunity, try another (known good) PSU, making sure its Wattage equals or exceeds the HP original.

Both the PSU and the CPU fans come on the light on the mouse comes on the monitor clicks like it is receiving a signal but shows nothing on the screen. I don't think it is a power switch problem but I will check as well as break out the voltmeter.

GOAOZ thanks for the suggestions!

Just a wild-a$$ guess but pull the CMOS battery for 30 seconds, then replace. Don't get your hopes up, many times when a PSU goes it takes the motherboard with it.

Any idea what happened when the PC failed?
