Hi all,

I'm not really sure what the name for my mac is. It's a silver/aluminium Power Mac G4 with a 800Mhz processor (I hope that distinguishes what it is).

Anyway here's the problem. We have two of them in the building and when I try to boot from a CD (I've tried norton 5 and 7, and diskwarrior) I cannot see the Local hdd. When I reboot without the cd I can boot into os9/x fine. I need to run nortons on it but I cant because it wont see the hdd!!

This problem happens on both of these macs but all other macs we have (imacs, powermac g3, other powermac g4's not the silver design) work fine from the same norton disc.

Is there something that needs to be configured?

Faster G4 used a faster IDE controller, I am betting you CD was made before that and can't operate the faster controller, (OS is too old) a new Norton's CD should see the new Controller

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Upgrade to the last version of Norton disk Doctor and you will be able to see the HDD. The system files on the current CD will not let you due to a newer firmware on the machince.

If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

If you need to run norton on the G4, you might try this... (it might work, I haven't used Norton in a couple years). Get a firewire cable, connect the G4 to another mac with firewire and boot the G4 with the T key held down until the firewire symbol dances on the screen (called Target disk mode). It should mount on the other mac as a removable firewire drive. See if your version of Norton will now work on that drive.
