power cut seems to have disrupted monitor connection 1

We had a power cut and despite the surge protection I have the monitor Proview 17"TFT now gives a no signal message.
I am running WinXP Home.
If I press the power button on the monitor it goes green while it displays the message then returns to the amber standby light.

Anyone any ideas about how I can resolve this.

Unlike what most people may think, power spikes are not the problem when things seem to "blow" up. It's in fact "brown-outs" that are most damaging to the equipment. Most power supplies for computer equipment are now protected against spikes but brownouts can only be prevented by a UPS. Brownouts are basically when the tension (voltage)drops but does not completly go out... and then comes back. The return of the power causes a sort of backfire that enters your computer that is the killer. The power bar cannot stop it because the jolt is under the fuses trigger level.

It is possible that either your screen or your video card has popped due to this phenomenon. Try plugging in another monitor you know works. You'll get your answer on which one is no longer working.

So would a 'brown-out' happen even if the power was off for 2 1/2 hours The PC wasnt on but it was plugged in and the wall switch was on I didnt think to go turn it off after the power cut.
I was working on my mac at the time and that is fine.
I will have to borrow another monitor to test it.

Brown out could of occured when the power tried to come back on. Your monitor may of been in power save mode (amber light) and when the power came on, the monitor tried to turn on also.. if there was a brownout in that instant... "poof".

Unfortunalty, these things are the mysteries of electricity.

Don't get me wrong.. your monitor did go "off" when the power went off.. but if it was in power save, it might try to go back to it's last state when the power comes back, which means the monitor turns on....

I didn't mean the monitor was in power save when there was no power

OK thanks I am now wondering if I can claim on my insurance it is only 6 weeks old.

If it's only 6 weeks old, it's still under warranty. Don't bother saying that you had a power failure.. just say that it stopped working. Play dumb. They should fix it for you under the warranty.

Good idea, and the power surge protection should warn about the brown stage anyway and cover for that.

Actually.. read the fine print and they only cover power spikes (or they simply write that they are not held responsible for broken equipement using their power bars..). Only UPS companies will slap on the "Money Guarantee" that your PC won't bust do to power flux.

yes I thought they would but they should make it more prominent. Belkin actually cover equipment due to spikes but I am not sure about the other factor. I will do as you suggest and take it back to the retailer with my innocent face on!

Good news. Whatever was the problem was fixed by uinplugging and replugging it all in again.
Thank goodness for that.
I had already checked the connections but not by actually taking everything off and putting it back.
